DEP Stop Work Order Asbestos Removal in the Bronx

Filings, abatement and documentation done in the right order, so the order comes off and stays off.

Getting the Order Off the Door, Properly

DEP issues asbestos stop work orders when asbestos gets disturbed without the required filings or controls. In the Bronx it usually starts one of a few ways. A gut renovation in a co-op unit pulls up tile and mastic with no survey on file. A boiler swap tears out old lagging. A commercial fit-out opens ceilings nobody tested. Somebody complains, an inspector shows up, the order goes on the door and every trade on the job goes home. Here is the honest version of getting it lifted. First, assess what was disturbed and what is still in place, and sample anything suspect so the lab confirms what you have. Second, get the required filings prepared and filed properly. Third, abate the asbestos at issue with a licensed contractor under full controls: enclosure, negative pressure, wet methods and air monitoring, followed by HEPA cleaning and independent air clearance. Fourth, assemble the documentation so DEP has what it needs to sign off. There is no shortcut through that list, and nobody can truthfully promise you a sign-off date. What a contractor can do is make sure each piece is done right the first time, so the order does not come back. GCs, expediters, owners and managing agents all call for the same reason. They want the job legal and their crews back to work.

What It Takes to Clear the Order

No two orders are identical. Most need all of this.

  • Order review

The citation, the disturbed material and the to-do list before trades return.

  • Sampling of the material

Accredited lab results on what was disturbed and what is still in place.

  • Paperwork filed

Notifications and backup documents drawn up and put on record.

  • Enclosure and negative pressure

Polyethylene, sealed penetrations and HEPA exhaust before removal starts.

  • Licensed abatement

Disturbed debris and remaining asbestos removed wet, packaged and labeled.

  • Air monitoring and clearance

Air sampled during the work and cleared by an independent test afterward.

  • Permitted disposal

Waste hauled to a facility permitted to take it, with records kept.

  • Documentation for DEP

Paperwork assembled so the remaining sign-off steps can be completed.

How the Order Gets Worked Off

  1. Assess

Forward the order and explain what set it off. Someone walks the site, marks what got disturbed and what is intact, and pulls samples.

  2. Paper, then abatement

Notifications go in. Then the zone is enclosed, the cited material comes out wet while the air is monitored, and every surface gets HEPA cleaned.

  3. Clearance and the file

Outside air clearance, then a complete records package so DEP's remaining sign-off steps can happen and the trades can come back.

Why Handle Your Order Here

  • Right order, first time

Each step lands once, in sequence. No do-overs, no second visit.

  • Comfortable under scrutiny

Experience on municipal and other government abatement projects means procedures are built to be inspected.

  • No fake deadlines

An honest picture of each step instead of a sign-off date nobody controls.

  • Filings prepared
  • Licensed abatement
  • Air monitoring
  • Documentation for DEP
